A simple, non ground breaking video tutorial on how I make a reflection in photoshop...
Others may have their own way...this is the way I learned and find it quite easy. You should have basic knowledge of photoshop to do this.

Please don't pick the shit out of it..its my first attempt at making a video tutorial for dA. Thank you for your view.

If this works out Ill make more for here.

Thanks a lot DP! I've been trying to remember how to make a reflection from my old high school notes but nothing seemed to work, I came here to re-learn how to make a reflection and the tutorial was awesome! Very informal plus I got to add a little "Umph" to my own logo; again thank you!!

Great tutorial! At first I thought that I knew how to do this...but I never knew that trick with the mask. I'll have to experiment with that a bit.

you can hold shift while draggin the gradient to make it straight, no need to use a guide :)

Indeed you can but then I wouldn't be able to show people how to also use guides...kind of a mini tut in a tut :)

I love this way! It looks alot faster. However, the gradient part is NOT working for me. And I have all my settings the same as your's that's visable anyway. Mine is all backward and the transparency isn't that contrast. It's like the opacity's low but it's not. D':

now... how do i add the shadow to things like you have on that little avatar?

:icondigitalphenom:
DigitalPhenom Featured By Owner Jun 2, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
well that avatar was made in icon workshop but its easy to do....duplicate the circle layer, place it behind the circle, fill it with black, gaussian blur, reduce the opacity to about 30 % and then turn on your transform controls by clicking ctrl + t and then click one of the small squares around the edge, then right click and free transform, grab the top middle square, pull it down to the bottom about 90% of the way. click enter on your keyboard to set it.....if it doesn't look right, just keep squishing it or adjusting the opacity so it looks like a shadow. hope that helps :)

The best thing about your vids? You learn more than what you clicked on it to learn. After watching this and your other ones, these keyboard shortcuts you show are great to speed things up, new things with fonts and text I was trying to find, what the heck you do with layer masks.... i learn so much that I dont even bother looking for what your tut is about, i just watch it. Definite fav :D

I would really like to know how you make those perspective reflections for your journal previews, especially with 2 or 3 screenshots ones!!

thank you so much.. I take the journal and click on transform controls...right click in the box and click on transform controls..then perspective..move one side to make it change th perspective. click enter to set it. Then I just do what I have done in this vide tut. and if you want to do more then one in one image you just do it over and over again :D easy

Yeah, thats the method, but I thought you do have a trick for doing that more quickly, if you want to do it often!! I wish there was a Photoshop Action ( customizable for all height & width) for that, I know I am sounding lazy!! :giggle:

Thank You so much for taking time to reply!! :D

Yeah, a action that could be adaptable for all sizes could be a lil daunting task, but not impossible.... perhaps may require some initiative from users, could be made for advanced users, i guess!! Though, still have not found any such actions here or from adobe exchange, dunno abt. the commercial ones!!

I have an action that frames photos...and it can be done with any size....although its on my pc that is broke at th momment..but when I get it fixed I will see what I can do. But eh steps I showed you in making it really only takes about 10 seconds to do...lol not much to it really. but....I wan to take on this challange of making this action..just to see if it can be done lol

haha I made a action looooooong back, [link] but thats for the shadow & never had much motivation to do more except for the routine actions!!

I agree it would take 10/15 sec. to do the reflections, but when it comes to perspective reflections, the image in itself is not a prob. but for the reflective part of image, you have to tweak it a extra bit to match the surface image compared to the straight image reflections.......won't be able to explain lol.......

Yay for challenges.... thats very sweet of you, but of course don't want to bother you!! :D

I don't know if I'm the only one that is having this problem, but I'm working with CS and every time I try to combine two layers together as you did here with the words and image, it never works for me. I push Ctrl and click the other layer, but it don't combine them. Oh and I'm not talking about Crtl E, I can do that and know that, I just can work with 2 layers at the same time. If you could help, that would be awesome, thanks.

And great tutorials, I you saved on my favs. Hope you make many more!

When you push control and click the layer it just "selects" the 2 layers...You cannot edit both layers like that...You have toi select both layers and then right click and merge layers...then edit that one layer. :) I hope that helps you. :)
